FB: Cards defeat Anderson 62-34

All doubts about Southport’s young offense were  put to rest Friday night as the Cards put up 62 points on Andersons defense as they went on to win 62-34. Running backs junior Denzel Hinton and senior Mike Williams provided a spark to the offense as they combined for 203 yards on the ground and four touchdowns all in the first half. Senior linebacker Paul Sommers excelled not only on defense, but also at fullback rushing for two goal line scores.

“The offensive line really carried us tonight,” said Sommers “but this game is over and our focus has already shifted to our game with Pike next week.”

After leading 48-6 at the end of the first half, the Cardinals second team trickled in to finish the game.  Leading the way in the second half was sophomore running back Adrian Bussey as he ran for 99 yards on the ground, which brought the teams’ rushing total to 336 yards on the night. The Cardinals will look to continue this positive momentum as they take on Pike at Lucas Oil Stadium next Saturday at 7:15pm. Pike is coming off a 24-7 setback against Center Grove.

FB: Conference Indiana has tough night on the gridiron

Staff Report

Overall,
Conference Indiana suffered through a tough night on the gridiron in week two
of the season. The league went 2-4 for the evening with one game suspended and
another scheduled for Saturday evening at Lucas Oil Stadium.

The
highlight of the evening was delivered by Southport. The Cardinals graduated
both their quarterback and top running back last season and there have been
worries about their offensive output. Those were heightened last week when they
dropped a decision to southside rival Roncalli. Week two should dispel some of
the concern. Southport posted 65 points in blitzing Anderson 65- Meanwhile;
Roncalli gave some credence to the Cardinal performance in the opener. The
Rebels blasted Franklin Central 35-7.

Bloomington
North also continues to be impressive. For the second week in a row, the
Cougars put forth a very solid defensive effort. It resulted in a 31-7 romp
over Bedford-North Lawrence.

Pike fell in
the most high profile game of the night. The Red Devils faced defending state champion
Center Grove and struggled offensively in a 24-7 setback. Those struggles were
duplicated by Perry Meridian who was shut out by Decatur Central 27-0. The
Falcons have yet to dent the endzone this season. Lawrence Central fell victim
to a rapidly improving North Central team 16-14.

Columbus
North was leading city rival East 21-13 in the third quarter of their annual
war when Mother Nature stepped in. The teams suffered through lightning delays
of more than an hour and a half before the game was suspended and scheduled to
be completed on Saturday.

FB: Cards to hit field at Lucas Oil

Southport’s football team has the privilege of playing in the first-ever Horseshoe Classic at the Lucas Oil Stadium on Sep. 5 at 7:15 p.m. Southport was picked to attend this after last year’s 9-1 regular season.

According to the Indianapolis Colts’ website, the purpose of the Horseshoe Classic is to showcase some of the area’s best high school football talent, including a team from Ohio. This is first time the Indianapolis Colts have sponsored anything for high school football.

Head coach Mr. Bill Peebles says he thinks we are very fortunate to be in the first of what will probably be many Horseshoe Classics. According to him, Southport would not have been picked if it wasn’t for last year’s championship season.

Southport is facing against Pike. Pike won their first game last Friday against North Central, with a score of 21-7. Pike is ranked in the top five teams in Indiana. Yet, according to Southport players, the team will be a good match for Pike.

After last year’s close win against Pike, Southport players believe Pike will be coming for the team strong.  According to senior Paul Sommers, it’s sure to be a really good game because both schools have something to prove and will be trying as hard as they can to win.

“I think it’s going to be an intriguing game,” said Peebles. “The Pike game last year was kind of our coming-out party. We upset them and that’s the game we started the roll with. Obviously, there are a lot of people wondering if we can do it again. So, I guess we’re going to find out. We know that Pike will be ready and hopefully we are too.”

According to senior Joe Gilliam, the whole team is excited to play at the Lucas Oil Stadium. He says they look at this as a good opportunity, but it’s also something they will have to work very hard for.

“The majority of the team hasn’t been (to the Lucas Oil Stadium) yet, including me,” said Gilliam. “We are going to be really pumped and very excited. I can’t wait.”

Before the team can focus on the Horseshoe Classic though, they have to put everything into tonight’s Anderson game. The team is just taking it week by week and using every game to keep preparing.

Although the team lost last Friday against Roncalli, Sommers says it went well and they learned a lot. According to him, the team always wants to win but they aren’t going to let a loss put them down. The team plans on using tonight’s game to put them onto the winning track.

Peebles says the game tonight should put Southport in a good position to move forward and get better before the game against Pike next weekend.

The football team goes into every game expecting to win, according to Peebles, and that is what they expect for tonight and on Sep. 5 at the Lucas Oil Stadium.

BS: How To… Slide tackle in soccer

How to… Slide Tackle.

These are the five steps that Roberts told me are key to slide tackling:

Positioning. You need to position yourself well, to get the most success from slide tackling an opponent because the better you position yourself, the better your slide tackle will be. Also, a better positioning will help avoid fouling the opponent. It’s most effective to come towards the opponent at an angle as he is dribbling the ball towards the goal that you’re defending.

Anticipating. If you don’t anticipate which way you opponent’s going then you will completely miss him and the ball all together. The best way to see which way he’s going is to look at the direction that his hips are facing. You also need to pay attention to which way he’s looking and dribbling.

The Slide. To slide correctly, you will need to not be afraid of a getting a few strawberries (a burn from sliding on the ground). When you slide, you will need to be on your side with your lead leg sticking straight out and your other leg bent in. You also need to make sure that your cleats aren’t facing up because if they are, then you’ll get a foul called on you.  If you slide on your back, then you will more than likely not slide or touch the ball.

Hitting the Ball. Once you slide, you need to be sure to make contact with the ball before touching the other player because if you hit the other player first, then a foul will be called on you and the opposing team gets to keep the ball. There is also a chance that you could get a card if you trip them instead of stealing the ball. If you complete the slide tackle well, then you might also be able to catch your opponent off guard and they might lose their balance.

Getting Up. After succeeding in slide tackling the ball away from the other opponent, you need to get up as fast as you can before you lose the chance of getting the ball. The purpose is to get the ball and if you aren’t quick enough while getting up, then you might not get the ball. After you get up and have the ball, you’ve completed a successful slide tackle.

BS: Sophomore transfers to reputable academy

Kobe Bryant, Drew Brees, Vince Carter and Venus and Serena Williams have all attended the academy, and on Saturday August 24th, Southport sophomore Andrew Oliver will join their ranks. IMG Academy is an athletics-oriented boarding school located in Bradenton, Florida. According to its website, the academy is focused on “total player development.” The academy’s goal is to recognize top-notch athletes and give them an opportunity to train in the best environment possible.

Of course, being selected to attend the self-proclaimed “most comprehensive sports program in the nation” does not come lightly.  For the past summer, Oliver has rigorously partaken in camps and tournaments designed to move individuals up through state, regional, and national competition. A determined Oliver successfully made his way into the national team’s pool of 100 players.

Three camps designed to cut the national pool size down to 40, took place in Florida, New Jersey, and Germany. Athletes who remain in the national team’s pool have the opportunity to attend the IMG academy.

On Thursday, August 13th Oliver received a phone call from a representative of the Academy who offered a chance to attend the academy, and he accepted. Oliver is the only player representing Indiana this year.

“It all just fell into place for me,” said Oliver. “I’ve been playing the best soccer of my life.”

Oliver will be attending the IMG academy for the next six months, where he will be eating, sleeping, going to school, and training with his new teammates. Members of the school stay in dormitories and attend daily training sessions together.

“It’s sad I’m going to be leaving so many people, but at the same time it’s really exciting,” noted Oliver.

The coaches and officials at the school will be monitoring individual progress over those months, with the goal of making final cuts at the end of the semester. If Oliver makes the cut, he becomes an official member of the U.S. National team.

BS: SHS vs. Franklin Community

Last night August 25, the boys’ soccer team defeated Franklin Community, 4-1. Franklin Community started the game with a goal, but the Cards fought back for a win. Senior Jose Castellanos, senior Christian Delgado, junior Wes Oliver and junior Simon Lian all scored goals for the Cards.

“Over all we played well,” said Brown. “We just need to work on putting the ball into the net.”

The Cards are working hard to prepare for the big match up against Pike on Tuesday, September 1. The Cards beat the Red Devils their first time they met last season, but lost to them in the County finals.
