The usual
suspects from Conference Indiana surfaced in wrestling sectionals Saturday.
Perry meridian and Bloomington South both won sectionals in overwhelming fashion.
The surprises came from Pike and Columbus North. Pike finished third behind the
Falcons and Ben Davis in the Decatur Central Sectional while Columbus was
second at Jennings County. It was impressive performances by both.
Perry
meridian and Bloomington South had nearly mirror performances. Both squads
advanced 13 wrestlers into regional competition and crowned six champions at
their respective sites. Columbus North advanced 11 grapplers to regional bouts
and had three champions. Pike was right behind advancing ten with three
champions.
Elsewhere in
the conference, Southport was fourth at Decatur Central despite advancing only
two wrestlers. The Cardinals crowned one champion. Lawrence Central was fourth
at its own sectional. The Bears had one champion among the seven individuals
they advanced to regional competition. Bloomington North was fourth at
Northview, advancing seven wrestlers and grabbing two titles. Franklin Central
was seventh at Shelbyville and advanced two individuals to the next level.
In all,
Conference Indiana advanced 72 wrestlers to the regional round and crowned 23
individual champions.
The Southport boys’ basketball team continued their struggles on Tuesday, losing yet another close game. The Cardinals took on the Warriors of Warren Central and played well throughout the game, with only a two point deficit at the half, but a third quarter shooting drought proved to be the dagger for Warren Central as they prevailed 60-51. Sophomore Mike Ramey again led the Cards, scoring 15 points, with fellow sophomore Kellon Thomas adding 13.
The Lady Cards lost last night to the Roncalli Rebels,62-53. The Lady Cards played a great first half only trailing by one.In the third they began to trial and were never able to catch back up.
Junior Ali Walker was the leading scorer for the Lady Cards with 16 points. Sophomore Zoey Freese had 14 points, four of her shots were three pointers.
Their next game is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 30 against Lawrence Central.The game is scheduled to start at 7:30.
The Southport boys basketball took on conference rival Franklin Central last Friday night. The Cards came out on the losing side of a long and hard-fought game, 48-41. Southport went into halftime with a one point lead but were outscored 4-10 in the third quarter, allowing the Flashes to earn a bit of a cushion going into the fourth quarter, eventually coming away with the victory.
Sophomore Mike Ramey led the Cardinals with 17 points on the night. Sophomore Kellon Thomas also added eight points for Southport.
On Jan. 12, Southport beat Northwest at home. It was Southport’s senior night.
Senior Jordan East, junior John Cleary and sophomores Brian Boucher, Griffin Rudisill, Demitrius Jackson and Ronnie Jones each won their match.
“Everyone wrestled really well,” said Boucher. “We have all been wrestling really hard lately and it’s obviously been paying off.”
According to Coach Weaver, they are continuing to practice hard and work towards tournament time. He says it was really nice to see so many wrestlers win at one meet.
On Jan. 9, Southport wrestled at the Columbus East Invitational. Five teams where there and Southport went 2-3. SeniorsVinney Parmer and Jordan East, junior John Cleary and sophomore Ronnie Jones each went undefeated at the tournament.
The team was originally scheduled to go to the Old Capital Classic Invitational but it got cancelled because of snow.
The Lady Cards basketball team took on the Columbus North Bulldogs Saturday, Jan. 16. The Lady had a big win, 51-42. The girls’ took a lead early in the game with 27 points in the first half.
Leading scorer was junior Ali Walker with 14 points followed by freshman Bria Wright with nine points. Both junior Chelsea Brothers and sophomore Zoey Freese had seven points each.
