W Conference Indiana: #5 Perry Meridian wins eight classes, tourney title

By E. Shawn Aylsworth

Fifth-ranked Perry Meridian took out its frustrations from a double-digit dual-meet loss at Indianapolis Cathedral earlier in the week by winning eight of 14 weight classes Jan. 17 en route to the Conference Indiana Tournament title at Bloomington South.

The Falcons won five straight classes going from 135 to 160 in tallying 251 team points. That was plenty enough to outpoint runner-up Columbus North (181.5), while the host Panthers took third place with 170 and Bloomington North finished fourth in the eight-team tourney at 151.

Most impressive, however, was Bloomington South’s eighth-ranked Brannigan Barlow’s giant-slaying performance at 130. After dispatching of Franklin Central’s Josh Dossey with a pin late in the second period of their opening-round match, Barlow pounded Perry Meridian’s No. 2 Sampson Cook with a 10-4 semifinal decision before toppling Pike’s top-ranked D’Marcus Spencer 6-3 in the finals.

Yowza.

There were a couple other upsets as well, both coming in the championship bouts of heavier weight classes. At 189, Bloomington South’s unranked Darren Eads upset No. 14 Daniel Sandberg of Lawrence Central, 5-2. And at heavyweight, No. 12 Jowan Gill of Columbus North pinned No. 5 Joe of Bloomington North in 4:46.

In the day’s other battle of ranked opponents, Perry Meridian’s No. 7 Jacob Tasseff outlasted No. 14 Marcus Waddell in the 145 finals, 3-2.

Finally, 10 of the day’s matches ended in first-period pins.

BSW: Cards come up short against Greenwood

The boys swimming and diving team was just in grasp of a win against Greenwood, where they competed on Wednesday, Jan. 13.  But the team came up just short with a score of 86 to Greenwood’s 99. Seniors James Sweeney and Kyle Kibby had a great showing in diving competition, finishing first and second respectively.  Kibby was  less than a point behind Sweeney. Although the swimmers didn’t win, head coach John Kirtland is proud of how the boys are doing.

“Our boys are beginning to show signs of life,” Kirtland wrote in an email to the Southport News Bureau. “Jake Canter, Jake Houschin, Ryan Clark and David Dart stepped up in big ways.”

The boys will be back in the pool on Thursday, January 15th, against rival Perry Meridian.

BB: Mid-season Update: Three teams to the wire

Mike McGraw

Hoosier Authority

It is time for a mid-season review on Conference Indiana hoops action.
The league is making another strong case as the premiere basketball conference
in Indiana.
As January begins, CI has a record against non-conference opposition of 31-14.
That is fifth best overall in Indiana
and the best among 4A conferences. Of course, it doesn’t hurt when you have two
of the top ten teams in the state. Bloomington South (6-0) continues to be
rated as the #1 squad in 4A and Franklin Central has been in the top ten all
season. The Sagarin ratings list both of those schools among the top 20 teams
in Indiana.
After a slow start, new coach Pete Spoljaric’s Pike Red Devils are gaining
momentum and garnering a lot of respect.

Inside the league, it is quickly developing into the
predicted three team race. Bloomington South, Franklin Central, and Pike all
stand at 2-0 in the conference and are the only teams without a loss in league
play. Southport and Bloomington
north are within hailing distance at 1-1.

The schedule pays no favors to Franklin Central. The Flashes
are on the road against both of their primary competitors. Mark your calendars
for the last two weekends in January. The Flashes travel to Bloomington South
on the 24th and the Panthers then go to Pike on the 30th.
If that set of games does not decide things, we are likely going to have to
wait until the end of the season. Pike and Franklin Central do not play until
the last week of February.
