All doubts about Southport’s young offense were put to rest Friday night as the Cards put up 62 points on Andersons defense as they went on to win 62-34. Running backs junior Denzel Hinton and senior Mike Williams provided a spark to the offense as they combined for 203 yards on the ground and four touchdowns all in the first half. Senior linebacker Paul Sommers excelled not only on defense, but also at fullback rushing for two goal line scores.
“The offensive line really carried us tonight,” said Sommers “but this game is over and our focus has already shifted to our game with Pike next week.”
After leading 48-6 at the end of the first half, the Cardinals second team trickled in to finish the game. Leading the way in the second half was sophomore running back Adrian Bussey as he ran for 99 yards on the ground, which brought the teams’ rushing total to 336 yards on the night. The Cardinals will look to continue this positive momentum as they take on Pike at Lucas Oil Stadium next Saturday at 7:15pm. Pike is coming off a 24-7 setback against Center Grove.
