FB: SHS vs. Roncalli

The rain came down hard last night August 20, as did the Cardinals chance of victory.  After quarterback junior Treavor Gebhart and wide receiver junior Cole Biggerstaff connected on a long touchdown pass in the first quarter to grab the lead for the cards, this was only the beginning of the down hill game with a final score of 21-13.

“ It was a tough game…but we took out some of the positives (from the game) and we are going to continue to build off of those as we prepare for Anderson next week.” said Gebhart.

Roncalli running back Brandon Petree had a breakout game for the Rebels as he rushed for three touchdowns and leading his team to a victory. Southport senior linebackers Joe Gilliam and Paul Sommers led the way on defense as they combined for 12 tackles, while sophomore Ronnie Jones also played well contributing seven solo tackles in his first varsity game. A bright spot on offense was junior running back Denzel Hinton, who rushed 12 times for 88 yards. The Cards will look to bounce back and get their first win of the season as they take on Anderson High School at home next Friday. The Cardinals were victors last year, coming out on top in a lopsided 43-9 game.

BS: SHS boys’ soccer vs. Roncalli

Last night, the boys’ soccer team lost in a hard fought game against Roncalli with a score of 1-0. We had 21 shots compared to Roncalli’s 9. Out of Roncalli’s three shots senior Nick Angeloff made 2 saves. Also, Roncalli had 21 fouls on Southport. According to head coach Mr. Josh Brown the game was very physical; this made it harder on the team.

Roncalli’s field is turf, which makes the ball travel faster, quickening the play. According to senior captain Aaron Dickey the team didn’t play their game or possess the ball.

“We are a good team and have a lot of skills,” said Brown. “We just need to do a better job of putting the ball in the net.”

Expect promising things from newcomer junior quarterback Treavor Gebhart and junior wide receiver Cole Biggerstaff.

“We will be a different team this year, but the expectations are still high,” said head coach Mr. Bill Peebles.

The defending Conference Indiana champions will begin their season against south-side rival Roncalli this Friday, August 21st. Roncalli will be lead by senior right tackle Matt Massengale, a top local player. The Cardinals will look to avenge their only regular season loss last year (27-7 at Southport). FB: Joe Gilliam commits

Southport senior linebacker Joe Gilliam committed last week to play football at Purdue next fall.  Gilliam was one of the most highly recruited players in the area after making All-State last season.

“I think it will (change the teams view) because it’ll be easier for other teammates to look up to me in tough situations on and off the field,”    said Gilliam.

One of Gilliam’s concerns when it came to college was he wanted to stay in Indiana. He was excited to find out he would only be an hour and a half away from home. Gilliam has focused on school and being a good student along with being a strong athlete. This should help him with his choice of majoring in business at Purdue.
