W: Cards lose to Perry Meridian

Southport wrestled rival Perry Meridian last night, Dec. 9, and lost with only 12 points the entire meet.

Seniors Jordan East and Vinny Parmer were the only two who won. Each pinned their opponent in the second period.

“Perry has a really good wrestling team,” said senior Patrick Lathrop. “I think they expected to run right through us, but we came up with a couple of good wins and I think that shows that we’re improving.”

BSW: Cards place 14th at County

Southport’s boys’ swimming team competed in the Marion County Swim Meet over winter break, on Friday and Saturday, December 18 and 19. They placed fourteenth out of sixteen teams.

“All of the guys swam really well,” said Coach Matt Jeffries.

Everybody on the team swam a personal best in at least one of their events. Some swimmers who swam exceptionally well were sophomores David Dart, Dustin Baker, and Cody Camp and senior Nick Green. Dart swam a 1:01.83 in the 100 back stroke, a two second personal best. Baker swam a 5:59 in the 500 freestyle, a personal best by three seconds. In the 100 freestyle, Camp swam a 1:10, a personal best by one and a half seconds, he also swam a nine second personal best in the 500 freestyle, 6:28. Green swam in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:58, a seven second personal best.

“I was just very happy with the way (the team) acted and swam,” said Jeffries. “They were just very excited and it showed in their swimming.”

BSW: Cards place fourth at Perry Meridian Inv.

This past Saturday (1-9-10), Southport’s boys swimming team placed fourth out of four teams, Perry Meridian, Franklin Central, and Roncalli.

“It was not a good meet,” said coach Matt Jeffries. “This meet had double of (the distance of the races) and we are too inexperienced to swim in that meet at this time.”

Sophomore Dustin Baker, however, swam an excellent race in the 1000 freestyle. He swam a time of 12:01, which is the equivalent to swimming two six minute 500’s. Baker’s best time of the season for 500’s is just under 5 minutes.

“They did have some good things,” said Jeffries. “They did continue to grow in their knowledge of swimming, but it was just one of the meets where you walk away and you’re not happy.”

GSW: Lady Cards finish last at Perry Meridian Inv.

In a disappointing last place performance, Southport’s swimmers were defeated by Franklin Central, Roncalli, and Perry Meridian in the Perry Meridian Invitational on Saturday, January 12.

Finals team scores: Franklin Central 120, Roncalli 118, Perry Meridian 59, Southport 20.

Southport’s coaches, in an interview on Sunday, January 13, agreed that while the results were a let-down of expectations, the meet should have no real effect on confidence as the team heads into the state tournament.

The team views the Sectional meet as the most important of the season.

“These meets all serve as good indicators of strengths and weaknesses that we can learn from and tweak before Sectionals,” said Southport Assistant Coach Anastasia.

The Lady Cards are scheduled to compete next at Perry Meridian in a dual meet with the Falcons, on Thursday, January 14.

GSW: SHS places 14th at County

The Southport girls swimming and diving team competed in the Marion County meet over a two day span on Dec. 18 and 19 at the IUPUI Natatorium. The County title was clinched in an upset by Lawrence North over North Central, who had enjoyed a 15-year run on top of the podium at the meet. Southport’s Lady Cards placed 14th out of 17 teams.

Despite a subpar team performance, Southport Assistant Coach Anastasia pointed out some encouraging individual performances.

“We had a bunch of girls swim season best times,” Anastasia said, mentioning the names of senior Amber Jeffries, who swam two personal bests in the 200 and 500 meter freestyles, as well as junior Lizzy Dart and senior Nicole Kistner, who both placed in the top 16 in their respective events. “[The meet] was a good chance to preview Sectional competition.”

The swimming and diving team is scheduled to compete in the Falcon Invitational on January 12.

BB: Franklin Central confounds yet another in 48-41 win at Southport

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director
SOUTHPORT – For all the years Mark James has coached Franklin Central, preparing to play the Flashes has been a nightmare for opposing coaches.
First, they must game plan defensively for a complex, ever-moving offense that can and will attack from all five spots on the floor. Offensively, they have to limit turnovers to an absolute minimum because they know the Flashes will not give them a great number of possessions.
Finally, they have to have a plan for the eventuality of Franklin Central having a second-half lead. That is because the Flashes will eat clock like a starving animal.
Southport coach Wes Peak is one of the best young coaches in Indiana, and his Cardinals had the right plan for the first two challenges Jan. 8. Like so many before, however, they had no answer for the Flashes’ stingy play with a late lead.
As a result, Franklin Central escaped Southport Fieldhouse with a 48-41 Conference Indiana victory.
Southport’s defense was excellent in the first half of the contest. Only a 30-second lapse that allowed the Flashes to run off five unanswered points midway through the second quarter kept Franklin Central (7-4 overall, 3-0 in league play) close at intermission. The Cardinals (1-7, 0-3) headed to the locker room with a 23-22 advantage.
If the defenses had been solid in the first two quarters, they were downright suffocating in the third stanza as the two teams combined for just nine points in the first six minutes of the period. The two key plays came in the final two minutes.
Kyle James drained a 3-pointer for Franklin Central with 1:15 to go in the quarter to give the Flashes a 30-27 advantage. Then, in the final seconds of the quarter with the Flashes leading 32-27, there was a scramble for the ball near midcourt that resulted in a jump ball.
Why was that so important? It gave Franklin Central the possession arrow and the ball to start the fourth quarter.
The Flashes took more than two minutes off the clock with their initial possession of the final period. They also scored. Instead of being down five points with eight minutes to play, Southport found itself trailing by seven with five-and-a-half minutes to play.
The Cardinals would never close closer than four points the rest of the way.
Franklin Central’s James Goodlow led all scorers in the game with 21 points, while James added 12 markers for the Flashes. Southport was led by the 17 points of 6’5” sophomore guard Michael Ramey.
Next up for both schools is a Jan. 12 opening-round game in the annual Marion County Tournament. Franklin Central will host Beech Grove (6-4) at 6 p.m. ET, while Southport will follow at 7:30 p.m. against 4A No. 9 Lawrence North (6-1).
The box score:
Franklin Central 9 13 10 16 48
Southport 7 16 4 14 41
Franklin Central: Goodlow 21, James 12, Pedigo 5, Riley 4, Williams 3, Bowles 2, Stevenson 1. 3-pointers: Goodlow, Pedigo, James. Totals: 15 15-25 48
Southport: Ramey 17, Thomas 8, Young 7, Grimes 3, Skirvin 3, Blackwell 2, Gilliam 1, Habersham 0, Sullivan 0. 3-pointers: Ramey 2, Grimes, Thomas, Skirvin. Totals: 16 4-7 41
