BA: Cards split double header at Franklin Community

The Southport baseball team traveled to Franklin Community last Saturday and split a double header with the Grizzly Cubs.

The Cards couldn’t overcome another slow start in the first game as they quickly fell to a 0-8 deficit, but fought back with a big seven run fifth inning to put the Cardinals down one run. The Grizzly Cubs held on for a hard fought 8-7 win. Senior C Bret Wampler led the Cardinals at the plate with his first home run of the season.

“I think we were getting a little comfortable going into Saturday and didn’t approach the first game with the intensity we have had.” said head coach Scott Whitlock. “I don’t see that being an issue with the remainder of our schedule.”

The second game of the day was a different story for Southport though as they never trailed and rolled to a 14-3 win. Junior RHP Danny West was a force on the mound and at the plate, allowing one run on only three hits for his first complete game of the season (5 inning game). West also went 3 for 3 at the plate with 4 RBIs, while Junior SS Austin Begley and Senior OF Daniel Barr hit their first home runs of the young season.

The Cards now sit at 5-1 on the season and will take on south side rival Roncalli tonight at Holder Field, located at Mary Bryan Elementary. Senior RHP Kenton Armbruster will take the mound and look to improve to 3-0.

“Tonight’s matchup with the Rebels should the Rebels should be a good one.” said Whitlock. “Roncalli is hungry this year…and they will be prepared for tonight.”

First pitch is at 5pm.

GT: Lady Cards defeats last year’s conference champs

The Southport girls’ track and field team competed in a three-way meet with Franklin Central and Perry Meridian, on Tuesday, April 13th. Southport defeated Franklin Central 70 to 65, and Perry Meridian 70 to 32.

According to head coach Nathan Fishel, the efforts of junior Emily Odle, junior Katy White, junior Kelly Hodges, and senior Allison Zorman led them to a time of 9:48, 10 seconds off of the school record. Fishel also attributed the win to leading efforts by sophomore Juanesha Bird, and senior Rebecca Lomax in the 200.

Fishel thought the meet was very telling of the direction the team is going this year.

“Franklin Central was the conference champ last year, and they were young,” said Fishel. “It was good to beat them.”

Southport will compete in another three-way meet with North Central and Ben Davis on Thursday, April 15th, during what Fishel describes as the toughest stretch of the year.

BA: Cards fell short to Cathedral

The Southport baseball team took on 4th-ranked Cathedral last night and lost a hard fought game, 6-5.

The Irish struck first with a solo home run by highly touted Texas University recruit Dillon Peters, and added two more runs in the second inning to put Southport down, 3-0. The Cards fought back strong through the next three innings to take the lead 5-3 going into the bottom of the 7th inning. The game only went down from there as Southport couldn’t close out the highly ranked Irish. Cathedral loaded the bases to begin the inning leading to Senior RHP Dan Barr replacing junior RHP Danny West on the mound. The Irish then scored their first run of the inning on a wild pitch making it 5-4 Southport. The game then came down to bases loaded with two outs when Barr balked in the winning run to put Cathedral ahead, 6-5. West was on the mound for the Cards giving up four earned runs and struck out six batters through six innings.

“Obviously it was a tough loss,” said West. “But it shows us what kind of level we’re on competing with a team like Cathedral.”

Leading the Cards at the plate were Senior 2B Austin Young with two hits, upping his average to .391 on the season and Barr, who was 1 for 3 with a triple, adding his 7th RBI this season.

“I’m hoping they can rebound the way they need to and realize it’s just a game.” Said head coach Scott Whitlock. “We played with one of the best teams in the state and had them beat, but just couldn’t close it out the way we wanted to. I feel that we gained more knowledge about our team and got better last night more than we ever have.”

Southport will look to build off this tough loss this Saturday as they travel to play in the Avon Invitational and will take on Martinsville and Avon with Junior RHP Treavor Gebhart scheduled to be on the mound. The Cards now sit at 6-2 on the season.

BT: Cards are victorious over Whiteland

In a win that advances their winning record to 3-1, the boys’ track and field team triumphed over Whiteland in a dual meet on Thursday, April 8th. The meet was held at Whiteland. The final score was Southport 77, Whiteland 54.

“We looked a little more like a team than on Tuesday,” said head coach Nathan Fishel in an interview today. “We’re realizing our strengths.”

Southport competed well in the distance events, winning the two mile relay, 800-meter run, and the two mile run.

“Our biggest challenge is to score more in sprints, jumps, and hurdles,” said coach Fishel. “Certain events we’re still developing in.”

Despite the team’s winning record, Southport has yet to face any markedly competitive teams.

“We haven’t faced any ranked teams yet. This week we face Zionsville, and they’re a very solid team,” said Fishel. “They’re very good and very deep.”

Coach Fishel also reiterated a point he has made in earlier interviews this season, that the boys’ track team is very thin in numbers this year.

“Zionsville has 84 boys and we have 33,”

Thursday weather was cold and damp, weather that is not conducive to record performances in track, a sport which is contested completely outdoors.

“It was cold. Not a good day for improvements,” said Fishel. “No one in our strongest events improved from the last meet.”

The Cardinals’ next meet is home, versus Zionsville and Tech, on Wednesday, April 14th.

GT: Southport defeats Whiteland in dual meet

The Southport girls’ cross-country team competed against Whiteland on Thursday, April 8th in what head coach Nathan Fishel described as “terrible weather.” The girls defeated Whiteland 96 to 36, bringing their record to 2-0.

Fishel said that important performances were put out by the field events, despite the weather.

“All of our field event competitors won their events, which was especially hard for them considering the weather,” said Fishel.

Fishel also said that many key runners were missing, including varsity hurdler sophomore Abbey Springer. Despite the team’s losses, the girls scored 20 points more than they had at their last meet versus Brownsburg.

“We looked better,” said Fishel, “but we’ll know more about ourselves after this coming week.”

The girls will be competing in a three-way meet with Perry Meridian and Franklin Central on Tuesday, April 13th at 5:00 p.m.
