BXC: Cards place 29th out of 43 teams

Southport placed 29th out of 43 teams at the Flashrock Invitational this past Sat. The team placed 16th out of 21 in the green race. Flashrock is the same type of race as semi state is, it is a good representative of the competition felt at semi state.

“I feel really positive about last weekend’s meet,” said senior Corey Jones. “There were lots of (personal records) and I think everyone came to the meet prepared.”

According to Jones, the JV also stepped up and ran well. He thinks the more competition the more adrenaline the runners feel, which leads to faster times. Overall, there were 16 personal records (PRs) from the 19 Southport runners. There were 5 PRs from varsity and 1 PRs from JV.

They are scheduled to run next on Sat. at the Southport Invitational.

FB: Cards come out on top over Bloomington South

The fans who made the trip down to Bloomington sure got their money’s worth as Southport came out on top 36-33 against conference rival Bloomington South.

The Cardinals defeated the Panthers of Bloomington South for second consecutive year as they played one of their best games of the season. Junior quarterback Treavor Gebhart was on point the entire game, passing for three touchdowns, two of them to junior wide-receiver Cole Biggerstaff. This was a huge win for the Cardinals who now have compiled a modest two game winning streak.

“It was a whole team effort.” Said Gebhart, “It felt good to come away with a big win in such a close game”

Reaching the century mark again in rushing was standout junior running-back Denzel Hinton. Hinton ran all over the Panthers on his way to 106 yards on only 16 carries. Hinton has now surpassed 500 total rushing yards on the year.

The Cardinals will look to defend their home field next Friday as they take on Franklin Central following Southport’s annual Homecoming Parade. The Flashes are coming off a big win as they stole Perry Meridian’s spotlight on their (Perry Meridian) homecoming night, taking a 23-16 victory over the Falcons.

Boys cross country raced against Perry Meridian on Sept. 9. Southport lost 47-19.

“I think it surprised the young men because Southport is typically on the other side of that type of score,” said coach Mr. Dennis Bruce. “This was very uncharacteristic of them and I hope they’ve learned from this that they always have to come to the meet prepared to run their best.”

Their next meet is the Ben Davis Invitational on Sept. 12.

GS: Cards victorious over Flashes

The Southport Girls Soccer team came out firing against conference rivalFranklin Central last night, scoring two goals within the first 10 minutes of the game. The girls looked strong throughout the entire game on both sides of the ball as they made their way to a 3-0 shutout.

Not only did the offense step up, scoring three goals, but the defense was crucial as they held the lead all the way to the end of the game. Senior Co-captain and goalkeeper Stephanie Shobe came up big on the defensive side with a strong game on goal, and sophomore forward Abby Springer distanced herself from the Franklin Central defenders, scoring two breakaway goals to carry the Cards on offense.

“Overall the team played with a lot of energy and effort,” said Shobe in an interview. “We just had fun out there and came away with a good win.”

The team will look to continue this trend as the take on Lawrence Central at home (Mary Bryan Elementary Soccer Fields) on Wednesday. The Bears are coming off a 1-1 tie against Bloomington South.

FB: Southport defeats biggest rival

For the second season in a row, Southport will retain “the rock.”

In the second half, The cardinals played well in all aspects of the game as they broke away from a 10-10 halftime tie with township rival, Perry Meridian. Southport used a little trickery to create some momentum coming out of the half, as senior half back Mike Willams connected with junior receiver Cole Biggerstaff through the air for a 48 yard touchdown. Junior quarterback Treavor Gebhart also excelled on offense compiling 218 total yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore linebacker Ronnie Jones played well for the defense coming up with big hits all over the field.

“It felt good,” Jones said when asked about his defensive play, “overall we played well, but we need to have better effort throughout the entire game.”

Week after week, junior running back Denzel Hinton continues to be a force on the ground, rushing for 112 yards on 20 carries.

The Cardinals will try to carry this positive momentum next week as they will travel to take on the Panthers of Bloomington South. South is coming off a 28-21 loss to cross town rival Bloomington North.

The Lady Cards lost to the Warren Central Warriors in three games. The scores were 11-25, 14-25, and then 10-15. Junior Chelsea Brothers had 10 kills and 2 blocks and senior Katlyn Busch had 8 digs.

“Valiant effort by the team given the injury to Walter that subjected some players into new, unfamiliar positions. Warren presented some offensive challenges that successfully disrupted the defensive flow of our young team and the players responded as best as possible.” said head coach Mrs. Barb Huotari.
