Cardinals Football Scrimmage

Quarterback Shawn Gibson has a very positive outlook on last week’s scrimmage against  Broadripple.

“It showed what we needed to work on and what our strengths will be against Roncalli,” Gibson said.

When Gibson was asked about his outlook on the upcoming season  he thought that the team was going to be strong.

“In this year, instead of years past we have a lot of returning players and the underclassmen are stepping up,” says Gibson.

Peebles’ and Gibson’s outlooks on the upcoming season are very much alike.

“ We kept it simple,” said Peebles, “but we could have executed better.”

According to Peebles, there are many injuries on the team but, there are also a lot of returning seniors.

Drew Andis was one of the players with an injury during the scrimmage. Andis thinks that this year will be better than last year.

“There were a fair share of mistakes,” said Andis,” but overall , (we played) pretty well.”

Andis and Gibson are planning for a win against south-side rival, Roncalli.

FB – Preview: Southport Hoping Recored Will Reflect Improvement

 Mike McGraw
Hoosier Authority

Coach Bill Peebles is entering his fourth year as head
football coach  at Southport High School.
It has been a massive rebuilding job that has yet to pay big dividends on the
field. The Cardinals were just 1-9 on the gridiron last season, ending last in
Conference Indiana.
You might expect that the pressures might be starting to wear on the exuberant
Peebles. In reality, the exact opposite is true.

Peebles believes the 2008 season may be the first real
breakthrough for a program that has made unbelievable strides off the field.
The Cardinals will have more players in uniform than any season since Peebles
arrival. The feeder system has begun having success on the field. Then there is
the most impressive fact of all. Southport
will field 24 seniors this year. That is the same number that began as freshmen
four years ago. That kind of retention is almost unheard of in football. It is
a solid indication of the loyalty and work ethic that has been instilled into
the Cardinal camp.

As you might anticipate, Peebles is expecting great
leadership from those seniors. That begins with Shawn Gibson, the Cardinals’
quarterback. Gibson will be in his second full season as the signal caller. Up
front, 6’3”, 240lb Doug Petty will lead the offensive line. The Cardinal
defense will follow the cue of linebacker Drew Andis. Andis is a 5’10”, 205lb
ball of bad news for opponents.

Offensively, Southport has
reason for optimism. The running game should be solid behind the skills of
5’11”, 175lb. senior tailback Julian Walker and his bigger buddy Fullback Tyler
Plummer. The passing game features the rarest of high school weapons, a quality
tight end. 6’4”, 215lb. Ben Jones patrols that spot and brings a variety of
talents to the job. Jones is a good run blocker and a big target for Gibson in
the passing game. Defensively, Southport will
be anchored in the line by 5’10” Andre Tudor. Junior Joe Gilliam will join
Andis in anchoring a linebacking corp that should be much improved.

The fascinating thing about the cardinals heading into this
season is that Peebles points to the same factor as both the strength and
potential weakness of his team. That factor is physical strength. The coach is
extremely happy with the work of his charges in the offseason weight room. He
believes the team will be stronger than in any season during his tenure.
However, he is quick to point out that a lack of size and raw physical strength
is still the biggest hurdle facing the Cardinals when they enter the tough Conference
Indiana
schedule.

Speaking of schedules, Southport
will get a good indication on opening night of just how far the program has
come. The Cardinals will host perennial powerhouse Roncalli on that evening.
The game is not only a big test; it is also the renewal of a once great
southside Indianapolis
rivalry. Peebles is ecstatic from both standpoints.
