The Southport Cardinals boy’s basketball team took the court at Greenwood Community High School last night against the heavily favored and 7th ranked Center Grove Trojans and walked away winners of one of the biggest upsets of the season, 72-69. The Cards came in with a 4-15 record in comparison to Center Grove’s impressive 17-2 record. Southport controlled the entire game, keeping a slim lead on the Trojans throughout the entire second half, and hit free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
Southport sophomore Kellon Thomas led all scorers with 33 points, with sophomore Mike Ramey adding 21 points for the Cardinals.
“It felt good,” said Thomas. “All we’ve been talking about is winning this sectional and taking it one game at a time.”
Southport will try to continue this momentum throughout the rest of the tournament when they take on Franklin Community on Friday.
“We played Franklin in our second game of the season and came out a little over confident, and they took care of business,” said Cardinal assistant coach Mark Stephens. “But this time around, 18 games into the season, I think we’ve grown a lot and matured throughout the season.”
Tip-off is at 6 p.m. at Greenwood Community High School.
