GBB: Perry Meridian splits with 4A #13 Center Grove, rival Southport

Perry Meridian split a pair of home girls basketball games Jan. 19-22, narrowly missing out on an upset of Class 4A No. 13 Center Grove before defeating township rival Southport, 40-31, in a Conference Indiana clash three days later.
It was an exciting game for the Falcons despite a heart-breaking 50-48 loss against Center Grove (11-4). The Falcons played hard and fought till the finish, with Indiana Junior All-Star Lindsey Spears playing her first game of the season.
Spears had suffered an ACL injury in volleyball. Ironically, her injury occurred in the Falcons’ volleyball game versus Center Grove.
The game was intense and went back-and-forth the entire way, but a low free throw percentage kept the Falcons from grabbing the lead.
“The loss was unfortunate, but all the more reason to get a win against Southport,” said Perry Meridian coach Mike Armstrong.
With the biggest rivalry game of “Red Week,” as the Falcons refer to it, Perry Meridian had to bounce back quickly from the loss to the Trojans. In one of their biggest games of season, the Falcons had a chance to move into second place in the Indiana Conference race.
The Falcons and the Cards took no prisoners in the first half, and the game was so close that many in the stands were biting their fingernails. After a jump-start reality check in the locker room from coach Armstrong, though, Perry lit it up in the second half to post the nine-point victory.
The Falcons now stand at 8-8 overall and 4-2 in league play, while Southport falls to 6-11 and 1-5. Perry next will host Indianapolis Cathedral (9-7) at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 27, with a big Conference Indiana battle at Bloomington South (12-2, 4-1) set for Jan. 30.
