INDIANAPOLIS – The Marion County Swimming and Diving Meet has a long history of dynasties. In the early years, it was Ben Davis that dominated the competition. Then, Lawrence North spent time as the big gun in the county.

For more than a decade, North Central (Indianapolis) has been the overwhelming force. That proved true again Dec. 20 as the highly ranked Panthers ran away with both the boys and girls titles.

#1 NC boys win seven events, down runner-up #32 Franklin Central by nearly 150
North Central’s top-ranked boys racked up 484 points on their way to topping their closest pursuer by nearly 150 points. No. 32 Franklin Central (339) gave a strong showing for the day to finish second, while Lawrence North (215) was third and No. 18 Brebeuf (201) finished fourth.

North Central’s boys won seven events on the day – including double wins from Ben Souders (2:00.32 in the 200-yard individual medley, 1:02.88 in the 100 breaststroke) and Brandon Siemasko (4:41.95 in the 500 freestyle, :52.78 in the 100 backstroke) – but overwhelmed the competition with their depth.

Another notable performance came from Franklin Central’s Brad Scott. He won both the 100 free (:47.47) and 200 free (1:43.12) and anchored the Flashes’ 200 free relay team (1:30.61) to victory. Andrew Stevenson’s :21.89 in the 50 free gave Franklin Central a sweep in the freestyle sprints.

Another stellar performance came in 1-meter diving, where Southport swept the first two places, including James Sweeney’s winning effort of 433.20 points. We would be remiss if we didn’t mention that Hoosier Authority contributor Kyle Kibby was second in that competition (congrats, Kyle!)

#5 NC girls win seven events, post team victory of 200+ points
As dominant as North Central’s boys were, it paled in comparison to the performance of the fifth-ranked Panther girls. They amassed 511 points and seven victories in rolling past runner-up No. 19 Lawrence North (301), with No. 36 Brebeuf (262) placing third and Franklin Central (191) finishing fourth.

Lauren Massey led the North Central charge. Massey, who is quickly becoming one of the best freestylers in the state, won both the 50 free (:24.06) and 100 free (:52.87) as well as anchoring two winning North Central relay teams. Not to be outdone, the Panthers’ Amy Katz won both the 200 IM (2:08.63) and the 100 back (58.82).

North Central’s dominance notwithstanding, there were a number of outstanding performances from other schools. Lawrence North won the 200 medley relay with a time (1:51.30) that was less than a second off the meet record, and Decatur Central’s Kaila Dunnuck prevented a North Central sweep of the freestyle events when she swam a 1:56.34 in taking the 200.
