The Southport Cardinal football team took home another victory last Friday, Sept. 12. But to the Cardinals, this was not just any victory, it was a shut-out against the school’s arch-rival, Perry Meridian. The 35-0 win made Southport’s new record 3-1.
According to head coach Mr. Bill Peebles, the Cardinals had a great team effort and were able to get a lot of people in the game. With many players getting in and off the field, the Cardinals had a lot of highlights.
“(Senior) Tyler Plummer was our player of the game,” said Peebles. “He had receiving and running, about 99 yards, blocked very well. He was our big third-down conversion guy. He had a great overall game.”
Offensively, the Cardinals’ senior running back, Nick Turner had another 200 yard game. Also, senior quarterback, Shawn Gibson threw his fourth touchdown pass of the year.
Defensively, senior T.J. Maloney had two interceptions along with senior Rayshawn Johnson who had one interception, this being his third of the season. According to Peebles, the linebacker play was solid with junior Joe Gilliam and senior Drew Andis.
“Any time you shut someone out, it’s a great defensive effort,” said Peebles. “The defense back play was very good. (Perry) threw as many completions as they did interceptions.”
The Cardinals will be bringing back the heat and confidence this Friday, Sept. 19, against Bloomington South. The game will take place at the Cardinals’ home stadium at 7 p.m.
