For the members of
the boys’ track and field team, expectations are set high this season according
to Coach Mr. Nathan Fishel. He
said that a lot of the varsity returners were on varsity for the first time
last year and that most of those kids were sophomores. Fishel believes that
there will be a big leap between the sophomore and junior seasons, and he hopes
that they can use that foundation and build on it this year.
“It will allow us
to be more relaxed and more comfortable,” Fishel said.
He expects
leadership from some returning varsity competitors, including junior sprinter Nick Turner, a two-time state finalist
and all-state athlete, senior thrower Mike
Case, who was a state finalist last year, sophomore distance runner Lance Nelson, who was a state finalist in the
1600 meter run last year, and junior hurdler Tajuan Wood, who was a sectional champion last year.
Fishel hopes that
as many athletes as possible will advance to the state meet this year. He also
would like to see the team win Sectionals and the Conference Indiana Meet. The
team has been competing in various unscored indoor meets, but the first outdoor
meet is scheduled for Wednesday, March 19 versus Chatard and Washington at
Washington at 4:30 p.m.
“We will
just be working constantly to get the kids mentally and physically ready,”
Fishel said.
